    Droplet ejection by electrowetting actuation

    Fast contact-line motion of a droplet spreading on a solid substrate under the electrowetting effect generates strong capillary waves on the droplet's surface. The capillary waves may be strong enough to induce ejection of a satellite droplet from the primary one. In this study, we show that the size of the satellite droplet and the ejection time are not only dependent on the contact-line velocity, which directly relates to the applied voltage enabling the electrowetting effect, but also affected by the ejection dynamics. We derive a theoretical model of the criteria for droplet ejection and experimentally verify the proposed criteria for wide ranges of viscosity, droplet size and the applied voltage

    FMI Compliant Approach to Investigate the Impact of Communication to Islanded Microgrid Secondary Control

    In multi-master islanded microgrids, the inverter controllers need to share the signals and to coordinate, in either centralized or distributed way, in order to operate properly and to assure a good functionality of the grid. The central controller is used in centralized strategy. In distributed control, Multi-agent system (MAS) is considered to be a suitable solution for coordination of such system. However the latency and disturbance of the network may disturb the communication from central controller to local controllers or among agents or and negatively influence the grid operation. As a consequence, communication aspects need to be properly addressed during the control design and assessment. In this paper, we propose a holistic approach with co-simulation using Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) standard to validate the microgrid control system taking into account the communication network. A use-case of islanded microgrid frequency secondary control with MAS under consensus algorithm is implemented to demonstrate the impact of communication and to illustrate the proposed holistic approach.Comment: Proceedings of the IEEE PES ISGT Asia 2017 conferenc

    Neutronic simulation of the CEFR experiments with the nodal diffusion code system RAST-F

    CEFR is a small core-size sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) using high enrichment fuel with stainless-steel reflectors, which brings a significant challenge to the deterministic methodologies due to the strong spectral effect. The neutronic simulation of the start-up experiments conducted at the CEFR have been performed with a deterministic code system RAST-F, which is based on the two-step approach that couples a multi-group cross-section generation Monte-Carlo (MC) code and a multi-group nodal diffusion solver. The RAST-F results were compared against the measurement data. Moreover, the characteristic of neutron spectrum in the fuel rings, and adjacent reflectors was evaluated using different models for generation of accurate nuclear libraries. The numerical solution of RAST-F system was verified against the full core MC solution MCS at all control rods fully inserted and withdrawn states. A good agreement between RAST-F and MCS solutions was observed with less than 120 pcm discrepancies and 1.2% root-mean-square error in terms of l e ft and power distribution, respectively. Meanwhile, the RAST-F result agreed well with the experimental values within two-sigma of experimental uncertainty. The good agreement of these results indicating that RAST-F can be used to neutronic steady-state simulations for small core-size SFR, which was challenged to deterministic code system.     An overview of 5G technologies

    Since the development of 4G cellular networks is considered to have ended in 2011, the attention of the research community is now focused on innovations in wireless communications technology with the introduction of the fifth-generation (5G) technology. One cycle for each generation of cellular development is generally thought to be about 10 years; so the 5G networks are promising to be deployed around 2020. This chapter will provide an overview and major research directions for the 5G that have been or are being deployed, presenting new challenges as well as recent research results related to the 5G technologies. Through this chapter, readers will have a full picture of the technologies being deployed toward the 5G networks and vendors of hardware devices with various prototypes of the 5G wireless communications systems

    VIBRATION ANALYSIS OF CROSS-PLY LAMINATED COMPOSITE DOUBLY CURVED SHALLOW SHELL PANELS WITH STIFFENERS

    In this paper, the analytical solution for the cross-ply laminated composite double curved shell panels with stiffeners is presented. Based on the smeared stiffeners technique and the first shear deformation theory (FSDT), the motion equations are derived by applying the Hamilton’s principle. The Navier’s solution for the simply supported boundary condition for all edges is presented. The numerical results are verified with the known results in the literature. The effects of the number of stiffeners, dimensions of stiffeners, and lamination scheme of cross-ply laminated composite doubly curved shell panels on the natural fundamental frequencies are investigated
